Histologic classification and differential diagnosis of mesothelioma.

چکیده
Controversy surrounds the diagnosis, classification, and therefore the epidemiology of those tumors which have been designated as mesotheliomas. The group includes lesions which are as broadly different as benign fibrous lesions which some authors refer to as fibromas and anaplastic tumors which are extremely difficult to differentiate from peripheral lung cancers. The former are benign tumors which are usually readily resected and therefore cured. The latter are unresectable tumors which are invariably fatal and which may terminate with extensive metastatic disease. The reasons for including all of these lesions under the category of mesothelioma and the differential diagnosis of the various types is discussed.

CD90 is a diagnostic marker to differentiate between malignant pleural mesothelioma and lung carcinoma with immunohistochemistry.
OBJECTIVES To pathologically distinguish mesothelioma from lung carcinoma, particularly adenocarcinoma. METHODS We conducted immunohistochemical analyses on clinical specimens, including 26 cases of mesothelioma, 28 cases of lung adenocarcinoma, and 33 cases of lung squamous cell carcinoma. RESULTS We found that CD90 expression was useful in making a differential diagnosis between epithelio...

Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis constitutes a very rare but often fatal malignancy of the male genitalia. This diagnosis should be suspected in patients exposed to asbestos and those presenting with clinical symptoms of either hydrocele or inguinal hernia. We report here a case of malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis. A 69-year-old man with a left hydrocele and inguina...
متن کاملThe Role of Immunohistochemistry Studies in Distinguishing Malignant Mesothelioma from Metastatic Lung Carcinoma in Malignant Pleural Effusion
Background and Objective: Early diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is the key point of its treatment. The main problem is the precise diagnosis of mesothelioma and its differentiation from metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. Mesothelioma exhibits complex immunohistochemical characteristics. The aim of this study was to study hybrid immunohistochemistry in the differe...
متن کاملImaging, Diagnosis, Prognosis Sequential Binary Gene Ratio Tests Define a Novel Molecular Diagnostic Strategy for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Purpose: To develop a standardized approach for molecular diagnostics, we used the gene expression ratio bioinformatic technique to design amolecular signature to diagnosemalignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) from among other potentially confounding diagnoses and differentiate the epithelioid from the sarcomatoid histologic subtype of MPM. In addition, we searched for pathways relevant in MPM in...
متن کاملPercutaneous image-guided cutting needle biopsy of the pleura in the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Pleural fluid cytology and non-image-guided Abrams or Cope biopsies have sensitivities of approximately 30% for detecting malignant mesothelioma, and thoracoscopic biopsy has a sensitivity of approximately 90%. The difference between these two probably relates to obtaining adequate tissue. The use of immunohistochemical stains allows a firm diagnosis to be made from relatively ...
